A visit to the dentist in Turkey
Have you ever been to the dentist in Turkey? More and more people are choosing a dentist in Turkey over their own dentist for treatment. However, having treatment transported within Turkey is not advisable.
It is by no means always safe and it entails a lot of risks. Today we will tell you why you should not seek treatment in Turkey.
Nasty Turkey for healthy teeth and other treatments
Medical tourism is a popular term for Dutch people who undergo treatment abroad rather than in the Netherlands. More and more people, adults and children, are being treated abroad, including, for example, in Istanbul, Turkey.
Dental surgery, such as the placement of implants, crowns, or a full dental restoration, is increasingly being performed in Turkey for Dutch people. Not only dental treatments, but also other procedures such as hair transplants or breast augmentation are becoming more common in Turkey. However, despite the low prices—which, incidentally, are more often than not a distorted picture—it is not advisable to go to Turkey for dental care.
Affordable price, but still many risks
The reason for a visit to Turkey is often the affordable price. The most beautiful results are also often promised. But is this actually all true? Double-check this. After all, the costs you have in mind often exclude aftercare. Furthermore, if complications arise, you will simply have to make another trip to Turkey.
In addition, there are a number of other risks you should be aware of. How satisfied are you with the practice? Do you know what materials are being used? For example, if you opt for crowns or implants, are you certain that the final result will fit well? What about the hygiene of the practice?
Do you have a good experience on which to base your visit to Turkey, or do you only look at the prices? Things like a large price difference seem attractive at first glance, but if you look a little closer, you will see that the overall picture of a trip to Turkey looks somewhat different than you initially thought.
Get treated all-inclusive in Turkey
Yet another reason for patients to have crowns placed in Turkey, for example? Everything will be arranged for you! The flight, the accommodation, and the Dutch assistance, from the first day to the last. That naturally sparks interest. But here, too, there are more risks involved than you might think.
Often not the same ethical principles
The ethical principles that apply to clinics in the Netherlands, for example, do not apply to Turkish clinics. In the Netherlands, you will not face any surprises. You know what to expect and what a treatment will entail.
Additionally, you can always clearly communicate your wishes to the dentist in Dutch. In Turkey, you will always have to hold a conversation in English, for example, so communication is often more difficult.
Facings
Veneers are also often performed in Turkey. This is a medical procedure in which a porcelain shield is placed on the front of the teeth. This is also frequently done in Turkey due to the low prices. However, the prices often exclude consultation and technical costs.
This means that the treatment plan in Turkey will end up being more expensive after all, because you are being misled by low prices that ultimately turn out to be incorrect when you receive the bill.
These costs are simply reimbursed by the Dutch dentist via the health insurer under the supplementary insurance. So, no reason to travel to Turkey!
Costs can add up for multiple visits
You should also know that it often does not stop at just one visit. Multiple visits are often required for a treatment.
If you have to arrange a visit to Turkey yourself, or if everything is arranged for just a single visit, the costs can still add up considerably. This is because most operations often cannot be performed in a single procedure. In that case, you will have to make several trips back and forth.
Turkey is more risky than the own dentist
We advise choosing dentists in the Netherlands. At first glance, there is often not much wrong. But when you conduct more thorough research, you quickly get the impression that things look different.
Often insufficiently qualified
Often, a dentist in Turkey is not sufficiently qualified; it is practically a certainty that Turkish dentists do not have the qualifications of a Dutch dentist. The risk of errors and health problems, such as pain or even damage to the teeth or gums, is high.
The treating dentist is also responsible for aftercare and any complications. You often can no longer go to them for this in Turkey either, and then you really do have a problem.
Dentistry in Turkey is rarely of the same quality as in the Netherlands.
Are you aware that there are eight European countries where no dental hygienists exist and six other countries where dental hygienists do exist but are not registered?
In the EU, dentists are expected to undergo further training time and again, but this is mandatory in less than half of the member states.
In the Netherlands, controls are very strict, and you can always be certain that the dentist holds the correct diplomas and certificates and is therefore sufficiently qualified to perform the procedure. Often without complications.
And do these actually occur? Unfortunately, this is not always preventable, but even in a country with excellent dentistry like the Netherlands, they can always be resolved without problems.
In the Netherlands, you are always assured of good, high-quality dental care. Additionally, more and more treatments are reimbursed through supplementary insurance. This means you end up paying even less than for a visit to a practice in Turkey!
Our advice? Don't do it!
So, are you considering a visit to the dentist in Turkey? Our advice: don't do it! The price savings are often illusory, and you must also be aware of the other risks you run by doing so.
And as you have read, there are quite a few of them. If you want to be sure that you undergo a worry-free procedure at the dentist, just stick with a dentist in the Netherlands.
This is increasingly well-organized through insurance, and more and more is reimbursed; it provides more security, and moreover, it is much closer!
