Implantology, an excellent foundation

If you are missing one or more teeth, an implant, also known as an artificial root, is an excellent alternative. Most implants resemble a screw and are made of titanium. The implant provides an excellent foundation for a crown, bridge, or snap-on denture. The implantologist places the implants on the jawbone by means of a surgical procedure. At TCN, it is possible to undergo the treatment under general anesthesia.

Implant placement: the procedure

The implantologist examines, using X-rays, which treatment is possible for you. Next, he explains the advantages and disadvantages of the various prosthetic solutions, such as a crown, bridge, or snap-on denture. Afterward, the practitioner can proceed with determining the dimensions and position of the implant. The prosthesis itself is made by the dental technician in our own dental laboratory.

Normally, the implant is placed under local anesthesia. However, at TCN, it is also possible for anxious patients to undergo the treatment under general anesthesia. After the treatment, it can take several weeks to months for the implant to fully fuse with the jawbone. Furthermore, regular check-ups, just like with a natural root, are essential for good oral health.

Don't worry, you can get implants at any TCN location!

The advantages
by implants

Implants are functional and permanent solutions for various problems. There are diverse reasons to choose implants:

  • An aesthetic solution: feel attractive with a beautiful smile!
  • Bone and tooth preservation: preserving the natural jawbone and facial structure and counteracting sunken cheeks;
  • A fixed (snap-on) denture: we replace the loose-fitting denture with a stable prosthesis on implants;
  • Implants prevent the need to grind down adjacent teeth, as is the case when placing a bridge;
  • Teeth placed on implants are indistinguishable from real ones;
  • With proper maintenance, the implants last for decades.

Costs implant

Health insurers recognize the problem of loose dentures. They reimburse snap-on dentures almost in full. The co-payment at Univé, Trias, VGZ, and IZA is approximately 180 euros. Please note: if you undergo the treatment under general anesthesia, the co-payment is higher. In addition, we always draw up a treatment plan and complete a medical questionnaire. The patient receives a cost estimate, and the application is sent to the health insurer.

Painless tartar removal

1. An aesthetic solution

Function and appearance go hand in hand; implants are developed to provide reliable stability, and the new implant solution also looks natural.

2. Bone preservation

Implants transfer chewing forces to the jawbone, which helps preserve the bone. Without an implant, as is the case with conventional bridges or partial dentures, the bone can slowly begin to shrink and the shape of the face can gradually change.

3. More fun

The plates often required with conventional dentures can cause pressure points and other discomforts. With implant treatment, such plates are not necessary. As a result, patients can experience greater comfort when talking, laughing, and eating. A North American study has described the benefits of implants and proven the theory that “those who kiss enjoy life more.” People with bad or missing teeth kiss less and, in turn, are kissed less than people with good teeth. Studies conducted by McGill University in Canada, with support from Straumann, have shown that the uncomfortable feeling during kissing is significantly reduced when dentures are held in place by implants.

4. Tooth preservation

With a conventional bridge, the healthy adjacent teeth to the left and right of the missing tooth must be ground down to support the bridge. When the gap is closed using an implant, the adjacent teeth remain unaffected and the natural tooth surface remains intact.

5. Proven quality

More than four million Straumann implants have already been sold worldwide. The Straumann® Dental Implant System is one of the most widely used systems in the world and is the result of more than 30 years of scientific experience.

The bridge solution

With conventional methods, the two healthy adjacent teeth must be ground down to hold a bridge in place. This leads to a loss of natural tooth surface. Because the bridge does not transmit chewing forces to the jawbone, the bone may begin to shrink.

A step-by-step guide to a new smile

A thorough diagnosis, personal consultation, and expert dental treatment are essential for a successful dental implantation. The path to a new smile might be less complicated and time-consuming than you think.

Diagnosis

Our implantologist examines and assesses, using X-rays, which treatment is possible for the patient. He discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the various prosthetic solutions. Using the X-rays or computed tomography (for three-dimensional imaging) and plaster models, the dentist determines the length and diameter of the implant.

Next, the position of the implant is determined. Sufficient bone must be present for the implantation to proceed. There are patients who have insufficient bone substance and for whom bone augmentation is necessary. This may be the case, for example, when a tooth has been missing for a long time. The jaw may then have slowly but surely shrunk. As a result, the bone must first be rebuilt.

Implantation

An artificial root is normally placed under local anesthesia. The dentist creates a custom-fit “bed” in the jawbone, into which the implant is placed. Depending on your personal medical situation, a temporary prosthesis may be placed on the implant during the osseointegration phase. This allows the patient to enjoy a natural-looking smile early in the process.

Receiving stolen goods

Before the implant is firmly fixed in the jawbone, a healing phase of six weeks to a few months is required, depending on the individual medical situation. The sutures are removed after approximately one week. Patients should bear in mind that meticulous oral hygiene is essential for proper healing.

The new teeth

Crown, bridge, or denture – the dental laboratory or dental prosthetics practice uses an impression or a digital 3D scan to create the individual restoration, which is placed after healing.

Aftercare

Just like a natural root, the implant can become loose if regular check-ups are not performed. Professional care of the implant extends the lifespan of new teeth. Poor oral hygiene and smoking can damage an implant.
