When you are going to be treated under general anesthesia, there are a number of things you should take into account. For instance, if you smoke, it is important to stop temporarily due to the reduced oxygen level in the blood. It is also important that you are completely fasting. This means that you may not eat or drink before the treatment. Finally, we strongly recommend refraining from using alcohol or drugs for at least 24 hours before the treatment due to their blood-thinning effect.

Patients who have undergone general anesthesia are often somewhat sleepy and drowsy. A small percentage of patients experience nausea or headaches. This may be due to your empty stomach. Fortunately, these symptoms are often temporary, and you can return home fairly soon after the treatment. If the symptoms persist, please contact us.

How long you are under anesthesia depends entirely on the duration of the treatment. Don't worry, you will not wake up as long as the treatment is in progress.

Whether you need to temporarily stop taking your medication depends on the type of medication you are taking. For example, are you taking blood thinners? If so, we recommend stopping them temporarily. This prevents us from being unable to stop any potential bleeding. Are you taking these blood thinners due to heart complications? If so, please consult your GP first to determine whether you may be treated under general anesthesia.

It is best to rest on the day of the treatment. Ask friends or family for help with childcare or household chores. You are not permitted to drive cars or operate machinery after a general anesthetic treatment. Therefore, arrange for someone to take you home after the treatment.
